When you create your own New Year’s resolutions for 2023, don’t forget to create health and  wellness resolutions for your pet too! As pet’s age, they have different health and wellness needs. Focusing on these key areas will improve your pet’s health and happiness throughout the new year.

Get a Clean Bill of Health from the Veterinarian

You can start your pet off on the right track for the new year by scheduling a check up with the veterinarian. The veterinarian will do a physical exam, evaluate your pet’s overall health, check your pet’s dental health and weight, and review your pet’s dietary and nutritional needs. The veterinarian can let you know if there’s anything you should change about your pet’s diet, exercise habits, or routine.

Be More Active and Play More

Most pets won’t object to this New Year’s resolution! Be more active with your pet and take daily walks or set aside 10-15 minute increments a few times a day for play time. This will keep your pet’s mind and body active and reduce the risk of dementia, weight gain, heart disease, and diabetes. Plus, regular exercise and play will prevent behavioral issues that stem from boredom, like chewing, whining, aggression, barking, accidents in the house, and other misbehaving.

Follow a Healthy Diet

Just like humans, pets need a healthy diet that gives them the right amount of protein, vitamins, nutrients, fat, and the appropriate number of calories. Check with your veterinarian to find out if your pet has any deficiencies you should address with a change in diet. You may also need to change his diet to prevent obesity, diabetes, and kidney issues as your pet ages.

One of the most important things you can do to protect your pet’s health is to make yearly visits to his veterinarian. If your pet hasn’t visited the vet in the past 12 months, schedule an appointment for the new year.
